“Insert Coin’’
A request that flashed for hours on end at the back of a comic book shop. Lit only by the glow of the arcade machine, that space behind the book shelves was the home to an entire universe in slumber. Every day, a hidden cosmos would be brought to life at the hands of a young boy as he went about his daily routine…
School bell. Bus. One quick stop:
✓ Pop Rocks
✓ Soda
✓ Bubble Gum
Now with some change in hand, it was game on. The metal clink of the coin echoed in the empty belly of the machine, causing the screen to light up with the spectacular display of its 16 bit Galaxy. Going through the motions, the master was back behind the controls. It must’ve been the hours of daydreaming in class that revealed the game’s secret to the boy, because as soon as he pressed start he entered a new realm.
